What is acupuncture?

It is a system of medicine that uses the insertion of very fine needles on the body at specific points shown to be effective in the treatment of various health problems. These points were mapped out by the Chinese over a period of two thousand years. The points are used to restore, stimulate and maintain health and balance.

The core theories of the system are:

Qi/Chi: the vital life force that flow throughout our body, mind and spirit.

14 Meridians: the pathways where this vitality flows.

Points: the places along the pathways where we can access and treat the vital life force.

Level of treatment: illness can occur at any and all levels of the body, mind, emotions and spirit of the individual.

How does it work?

No one knows completely how it works but there are on- going research studies to find the answers.

The scientific view is that acupuncture stimulates neurotransmitters and neuro-hormones and they, in turn, affect the immune system and release endorphins that decrease pain.

The Eastern view is that acupuncture restores balance of the qi, or vital energy, that runs throughout the body. The acupuncture points access this qi and move it to a less blocked, less deficient or less excess state, depending upon what is needed.

What is an initial session?

The first visit is for an assessment of your health using both Western and Eastern methods; a diagnosis is made, a treatment plan is discussed and you receive your first acupuncture treatment.

The time allotted is one and a half to two hours for this first session. My time is devoted to you as I see only one person at a time for this and all future sessions.

What happens after the initial session?

Because acupuncture is a healing art that is based on the laws of nature, it does whatever nature will allow within each individual.

The timing of treatments depends on your unique needs. Usually I see patients once a week for four to six treatments and then we re-evaluate the progress. The time allotted for follow up treatment is forty-five minutes to one hour for each person.

How do I get started and what if I have more questions?

There are two ways to begin: If you are ready to start, contact me by email or by phone and we will schedule your first appointment. If you have questions and are not sure, arrange to come in for a free, thirty-minute consultation to discuss your questions.

After the initial series of treatments, how will I know when to come for treatment?

The amount and timing of treatments as well as the response to treatment will vary according to each person. Sometimes the response is immediate, but more often, it can take four to six treatments, usually weekly at the beginning, to see progress.

Because we are in partnership, you and I will discuss what is a timely sequence for any future treatments. In addition, here are some other ways to know when to schedule an appointment:

l. When a season transitions to the next one, a tune up is needed.
2. When there is additional physical or mental stress;
3. When a new symptom appears or an old one reappears.

Can acupuncture work along with my western medical treatments?

It is important to let your acupuncturist know of your medications and treatments. Your acupuncture sessions can become most effective when all your health treatments are known and planned for.

Do not stop taking any medications without the approval of your western physician. Your acupuncturist can work in combination with you and your western medical practitioners to help you create your optimal health.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

My office does not accept insurance but I am happy to provide you with a properly coded medical bill that you can submit to your insurance company or flexible spending account for reimbursement.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, personal checks and credit cards, payable at the time of treatment.

What are specific advantages of Eastern and Western medicine?

Western medicine is great at dealing with acute infections, complicated diseases, trauma and emergencies. Western medicine focuses on treating the physical symptoms and uses an outside source such as surgery and/or drugs for treatment.

Eastern medicine is effective at treating chronic and degenerative diseases and psychosomatic symptoms. Eastern medicine emphasizes supporting your internal healing capacity by strengthening the interior, such as your immune system.

How can I assist with my treatments?

1. Before and after treatment:

A When coming to the initial session, please refrain from using make-up, perfumes and powders. Wear comfortable clothes.
B. Eat lightly and do not skip a meal right before treatment.
C. Avoid extremely hot or cold showers, baths or hot tubs.
D. Do not rush to your treatment. If you are running late, relax and arrive less stressed and tense.
E. Plan your activities so that after a treatment, especially the first few, you can take time to let your body gain the maximum benefit.
F. Do continue prescription medications exactly as directed by your physician.
G. Refrain from drinking alcohol immediately before a treatment and for 24 hours after a treatment.

2. Be aware of changes:

Please keep track of any changes in physical or emotional patterns that occur between treatment sessions, especially paying attention to the first day or two after a treatment.

Do not be concerned if you feel changes happening. They are important to your healing process. Your practitioner will monitor them. PLEASE do not hesitate to call if you have ANY questions or concerns about your treatments or any changes that occur.
